Position Summary and Responsibilities

The Senior Manufacturing Process Engineer (MPE) will drive improvement of overall manufacturing processes through analysis and strategic planning. Identify inefficient manufacturing processes and work to eliminate/change them to increase output and decrease costs all the while improving quality.  Work with Sustaining Engineering, Production and Customer Support teams to improve internal testing process and thus improve quality of the product striving to exceed customer expectations. Be critically involved in the transfer of complex Teledyne Optech systems to manufacturing from the Product Development groups.

 

  • Create and implement manufacturing methods and systems, adhering to best manufacturing practices such as Lean Manufacturing and in compliance with regulations and/or industry certifications. The goal is to achieve best production efficiencies, manufacturing techniques, costs and production yields while continuously improving product and process quality.
  • Analyze Current Production Procedures and standards by estimating manufacturing costs, evaluating time standards, and making recommendations for tooling and process improvements of existing product lines. Spend time on the production floor analyzing workflow to find out where the process can be streamlined for lower costs and higher productivity. Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout while meeting manufacturing process, product, and quality assurance requirements.
  • Research new technology and equipment and propose manufacturing upgrades in order to support new products introduction and improvement of the existing manufacturing flow. The upgrade plans will be prepared, submitted for approval and then managed by the MPE to ensure smooth and timely implementation.
  • Work actively with the Product Development group to ensure efficient and timely introduction of new products into production. Provide manufacturing feedback to the new product development to ensure DFMA of products, review drawings, work instructions, BOM’s and other engineering documents and successfully transfer products to manufacturing
  • Outsourcing - MPE will constantly review the current Bill of Material and will make Make/Buy decisions based on Cost/Benefit analysis. The decisions should improve production throughput, improve quality and testability of the product and provide greater flexibility of the manufacturing flow. MPE will closely work with Purchasing group to engage suppliers and assess their test capabilities and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Manage the continuous improvement process by conducting effective root cause investigation and analysis, implementing corrective/preventative actions, and maintaining quality metrics for monitoring and measuring. Implement statistical methods and recommend changes in designs, tolerances, or processing methods. Lead PFMEA activities

Qualifications

  • 10+ years manufacturing process engineering experience with proven track record of improving manufacturing efficiency, reducing production costs and improving the product quality.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline is required. Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineers preferred.
  • Electronics manufacturing background is preferred.
  • Experience working within electronic manufacturing setting– MPE must be familiar and have experience working with electronic and opto-mechanical assembly, integration and testing. Thorough understanding of all the production steps is required in order to successfully perform the job.
  • Strategic planning skills– MPE will think ahead and will see the big picture when planning new manufacturing processes. MPE should be able to identify strategic changes that will have big impacts.
  • Project management experience– MPE should be able and know how to run a project from start to finish. This often includes working with other teams, which is crucial for the project success.
  • Critical thinking– MPE will approach a process while considering it from all angles. The ideal candidate will question status quo and will not leave any stone unturned.  The MPE should know how to analyze each step in the process and understand the implications of what was found and be able to identify ways for improvement.
  • Interpersonal communication skills–MPE will communicate clearly and efficiently with teammates and management, so everyone understands what processes are changing and hpw those changes will positively impact the company performance.
